Levels of Radioactive Substances in Pacific Marine Increase
Tokyo, Japan, May 4, 2011 /WNCNews/ ?? Levels of radioactive substances have increased
in Japan??s Pacific seabed, especially near the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, which
was paralyzed by the earthquake and tsunami on last March, thus as reported by the rea
ctor operator.
??Samples which are collected from areas on the seabed which is located about 15 kilom
eters (9 miles) from the Fukushima DaiichiNPP contain cesium-138 as much as 1400 becqu
erels per kilogram,?? said Tokyo Electric Power Company(TEPCO).
The levels of radioactive substances were 600 times higher than maximum levels in
the past, 2.3 becquerels per kilogram, which was detected in the northeast of
Fukushima Prefecture.
The samples which were taken on Friday also contain levels of cesium-134 as much as
1300 becquerels and 190 becquerels of iodine-131, according to TEPCO statement that
was issued on Tuesday night, after the first analysis of the seabed since the
massive disaster on March 11.
According to TEPCO spokesman, levels of both compounds were too low to be measured
in the past. The company did not say whether it is considered as dangerous levels or
not.
Meanwhile, samples taken at another location, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from
the reactor also showed the levels ofradioactive substances which is also high.
TEPCO said that they will continue to check radiation levels.
We can not say anything exactly with a single proof. We will conduct the examination
of more samples and keep to monitor,?? said the spokesman.
Samples taken from a depth of 20-30 meters (66-100 feet) about 3 kilometers from the
coast. Fukushima nuclear power planthas released radiation into the air, land, and
sea after suffering severe damage from a large earthquake and tsunami.
Greenpeace, last Tuesday, started doing independent tests on samples of sea water arou
nd Japan??s nuclear plants which are paralyzed because radiation contamination.
Samples will be collected outside 12 miles of the territorial waters of Japan in acc
ordance with government regulations,?? said Greenpeace.
